Thanks to Rob Hallawell for the Recap.... (Results Below) YOUNG GUNS AIM FOR THE CAROLYN NUTE TITLE While the old guard of San Diego Snipe sailors were well represented at this year's Carolyn Nute regatta, a new breed of Sniper has emerged. In attendance, as always, were past Snipe Champions such as Randy Lake, Doug Hart, Craig Leweck, Chuck Sinks, and Chris Snow. On hand to test their skills in the Snipe were a few college age (plus or minus) rock stars such as Tyler Pruett, Mikee Anderson, Brian Janney and Adam Roberts. Toss in a dash of Fleet 495's regular stars such as Gavin O'Hare, Dave Tillson, Rick Arneson, Steve Stewart, Eric Krebs and Rob Hallawell, and Mission Bay was sure to see some wild mark roundings and crazy scores. Saturday morning opened to gray skys, very light winds and a light but cold drizzle. This was less Southern California and more like a lake on the east coast. Yes, it seemed like the Atlanta Halloween regatta had sent their weather to San Diego! After drifting around for an hour, 3 races were sailed in light and fluky conditions. Randy Lake adjusted quickly to this new Mission Bay and won the first 2 races. With an OCS in race three, however, the day one lead was up for grabs. It didn't take a long look at the scores to see that the young guns were making serious noise. After winning race three, Mikee Anderson (USC freshman), with crew Graham Biehl, was first with 10 points. Only 5 points separated 2nd through 6th and the youngsters were well represented throughout that mix. Saturday night at the Carolyn Nute regatta is usually the highlight of Fleet 495's year. This author (I would prefer at this point to remain nameless) is embarrassed to have missed the traditional Halloween costume party and thus can not comment on the shenanigans. My excuse, if I may, is that my wife now only deals with people "who have finished top three in a Worlds" and decided to jet to Europe instead of helping out with 2 heartbroken children. Rather than leave them crying with a baby sitter, I opted to stay at home. That, and I couldn't figure out a costume to top last year's "Hooter's Girl". Anyway, back, to the regatta. And, thank goodness, back to San Diego weather. Sunday proved to be sunny throughout, with the much steadier breeze slowly building to allow even us heavy weights to sit up on the weather rail by the end. As the breeze steadied, so did the scores of the old guard. Winning day two was Craig and Lisa Leweck with 17 points for the four races. In 2nd for Sunday was Chuck Sinks and Aine McClean. Gavin and Holly O'Hare were 3rd. Nobody, however, could match Mikee Anderson and Graham Biehl for consistent top scores over the entire regatta. Throwing out his one hiccup, Mikee counted all top 6 finishes to win the regatta easily. Gavin O'Hare was also consistent, but couldn't match Mikee's bullets and 2nds and had to settle for second overall. Randy Lake, on the other hand, was brilliant with three first and two thirds, but was forced to eat an 18 and finish 3rd. Close behind were Doug Hart, Chuck Sinks, Chris Snow and Craig Leweck in 4th through 7th. Adam Roberts, Tyler Pruett and Brian Janney had been pushed back, but not out of the top ten. With tight starting lines, short legs, and a top group that went at least 15 deep, this was a mentally exhausting yet amazingly fun regatta. As much as these young hot shots have been sailing the Snipe, both as skipper and as crew, Fleet 495 is quickly adopting them into the group. It is the hope of all that we get a chance to do battle again soon. Especially when I get my boat and crew back!
