We didn't have our usual Indian Summer conditions at this California lake, but the fifteen boats that made the trip did share in some very competitive sailing. Jack Hutsings once again ran the event in his laid back style. Bill Hardesty and Charisse Boyd recorded a pair of book end bullets to win the tight series. The first eight boats were within 12 points of each other.
As the scores show, it was just as competitive at the back as at the front of the fleet. Saturday was uncharacteristically overcast, but a nice steady 8-12 knot breeze held for the three races. Dave and Barbie Tillson had great speed and the ability to pick the shifts better than the rest of us. Lots of action was happening on the downwind legs. In race one, Nathaniel and Michelle rallied from about tenth at the weather mark to first at the leeward mark. Saturday night, we pissed off Ranger Rick. Maybe he couldn't take Gavin's campfire crooning.
On Sunday, the weather looked more promising, but the wind was slow to fill in. The first race was delayed while the fleet drifted out, and the wind died again on the first reaching leg. The Tillson's, the regatta leaders were now fighting to stay out of last in the competitive fleet. The breeze eventually filled in for the finish, and the final race to the harbor. Despite Jack's instructions at skipper's meeting, we did have a protest. With no formal committee on hand, it was suggested that all the participants get to sit in on the parking lot hearing with short one minute testimonials. This soon became known as the "Tribal Council", and a majority decision was quickly reached . Thanks to everyone who came to sail or just party.
