San Diego Team Race Classic

Easter Weekend (30-31 March) marked the third annual Contemporary Team Race Classic Regatta, hosted by the US Team Race Association and the San Diego Yacht Club. 13 teams including high school, collegiate, and contemporary sailors traveled from East and West Coasts to do battle on the waters of San Diego Harbor. The format was three vs. three in Flying Junior with color coordinated team flags. This years' regatta was designated as the USTRA PCC's and also a US Sailing Team Racing Championship qualifier.

The La Playa cove between San Diego YC and Southwestern YC provided a perfect venue with ideal conditions for team racing, 5-10 knots. A crew of umpires led by Don Becker and Bryan McDonald ensured on the water judging in accordance with Appendix D.

The event commenced Friday evening with a 'grass roots' team racing forum on progressing the sport of team racing and meeting the umpires and race committee. Racing began Saturday with completion of an impressive 39 races, qualifying six of the thirteen teams into the final bracket elimination. Two more teams earned 'Re-birth' into the final elimination by beating all of the other teams who had not qualified Saturday. Sunday's racing consisted of the top eight teams in a seated bracket elimination to determine the regatta champions. At the end of the day, it was the two teams that barely qualified that were in the finals. Treasure Island Sailing Club, defeated Team Well Hung in the best of three races. Treasure Island Sailing Club are the Pacific Coast Champions and earn a berth to the Hinman Championship in New Orleans in November. The 2003 Hinman will be hosted by the St Francis Yacht Club and the local Treasure Island Sailing Club fleet.

1st TREASURE ISLAND SAILING CLUB (9wins & 3losses); Sellers/Sellers, Bourdow/Porter, Adamson/Patton

2nd WELL HUNG (7wins & 5losses); Hardestry/Sinks, Torerson/Sheahan, Cox/Amen

3rd HABITUAL OFFENDERS (6wins & 4losses); Meade/Fousek, Wells/Krivkovich, Merrick/Alsina

4th NADS ALUMNI (6wins & 4 losses); Coleman/Cronan, O'Bryan/Suaton, Hallawell/Hallawell
